"PLANTS IN THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT" - RESEARCH PROJECT WITH CITIZEN PARTICIPATION

(11/21)

As already reported in the HHU News , this year a project from Biology on the topic of "Plants in the urban environment" was selected alongside applications from Cultural Studies and Health Research.

Projectmanagers: Prof. Dr. Petra Bauer (Institut für Botanik), Prof. Dr. Maria von Korff Schmising (Institut für Pflanzengenetik)

More detailed information on the topic of "Citizen's University in Research" as well as an overview of all projects funded so far can be found on the webpages of the Bürgeruniversität.

CEPLAS GRADUATE SCHOOL

(10/2021)

The CEPLAS Graduate School offers a multi-year doctoral program, organised in collaboration with several universities and institutes. The PhD students work in one of the CEPLAS member laboratories on a research topic. Various training programs complete the training.

We are pleased to have Mary Ngigi, a participant in the CEPLAS Graduate School, join our institute.

"I am glad to have joined the CEPLAS Gradschool program where I have gained invaluable experiences on plant science. During the one-year qualification phase I have acquired theoretical knowledge on topics within CEPLAS research areas. I have also been exposed to various experimental techniques through the lab rotations in form of internships. Additionally, the monthly early career researchers’ seminars have offered me a platform for productive exchanges and networking with other multi-diverse scientists as I grow into a scientific career."

In a new issue of "CEPLAS Faces On Air" Mary Ngigi provides insights into her everyday work:

  • Ekaterina Ponomareva, PhD student, HHU Düsseldorf
  • Wibke Schumann, PhD student, HHU Düsseldorf
  • Dr. rer. nat. Sabrina Bennstein, ITZ Universitätsklinikum Düsseldorf

  • Dr. Alisandra K. Denton, CEPLAS HHU Düsseldorf

Weitere Informationen unter https://twitter.com/Soapbox_Rhld oder Soapbox Science sowie unter HHU News.

"Soapbox Science is a public platform where women present their research in an easy-to-understand way. Without technical equipment, at eye level with the audience, they convey the fascination of their work. In this way, they want to reach people who otherwise have little to do with science and who may have a false image of science."

(Arne Claussen, HHU Wissenschaftskommunikation)

Due to corona, the Soapbox Event 2020 in Düsseldorf could only take place virtually. Prof. Dr. Bauer was one of the four HHU participants at this event last year. A video of the German session of the event can be found on YouTube.

HHU DIVERSITY-Week 17.-23. Mai 2021

(05/21)

"Diversity" at Heinrich-Heine-University stands for a variety of attitudes, perspectives and lifestyles. This year, Diversity Day is being expanded into an entire - virtual - week of action. 14 HHU institutions present themselves and their activities as part of the Diversity week.

What is the concret value of gender equality and diverstiy in research and teaching?

  • The Bio120 (Botany) short lecture from WS 2020/21 for Bachelor Biology students contains contributions to draw attention to this topic. It is now available as a video series "Bio120 Biologie Botanik_Interessantes in Kürze" in the media library for the Bio120 Botany lecture >> Videos by Prof. Dr. Petra Bauer on ILIAS.
  • The seminar "Women Pioneers in Plant Biology" in the summer semester 2020 was not only about fascinating findings and methodological approaches from research of the past and present, but also about the lives of women scientists in the course of time.

PUBLIKATION "Rice adaptive tolerance to iron toxicity"

(04/2021)

"Iron is a crucial micronutrient, however, lowland rice cultivated in acidic paddy soil environments rather suffers from iron toxicity. Kar et al. investigated the contrasting abilities of two lowland rice varieties to cope with iron excess stress and revealed metal homeostasis genes that are part of an adaptive tolerance mechanism selected during rice domestication. These findings can be used for breeding targeted excess iron tolerance in rice crop varieties."

Die Veröffentlichung "Comparative Transcriptomics of Lowland Rice Varieties Uncovers Novel Candidate Genes for Adaptive Iron Excess Tolerance" erfolgte in der Ausgabe Plant and Cell Physiology, Vol. 62, Issue4, April 2021 https://doi.org/10.1093/pcp/pcab018
